President’s Message

It was wonderful having 90 people attend our April meeting and the message from Sheriff, John
Nowels and Spokane Co. Prosecuting Attorney, Larry Haskell, were profound and a wake-up to
everyone living in our Spokane community!
April is National Hope Month.  In these challenging and unnerving times, I think having Hope is
probably more important now than ever.  Without Hope, all is lost.  Hope helps us focus on a
positive trajectory, and to take time and reflect on things that are going in a positive direction.
Our country faces continued challenges every day and just when you think you have heard it
all…you haven’t.  Someone or something else is revealed in the battle to save the soul of
America each and every day.  It’s up to each of us to remain vigilant to the truth, dispel
falsehood, evil, and continue to have Hope.  There are only 207 days until the November 5th
election and I know that every day will continue to be a battle.  If we are persistent and have
Hope, we will win the war against those who seek to dismantle, reimagine or destroy our
precious United States of America.
Looking ahead to our May 14th meeting, we are excited to have gubernatorial candidate, Dave
Reichert, as a speaker along with our legislative representatives Jenny Graham, Suzanne
Schmidt, Mary Dye, and Jacquelin Maycumber.  You won’t want to miss this informative meeting,
so be sure to get it on your calendar!
Jan Grayhek
For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord. Plans to prosper you and not harm you, plans to

give you hope and a future.   Jeremiah 29:11

April 9th

Join us as we gather to address a pressing concern that has deeply impacted our community: the fentanyl crisis in Spokane. Fentanyl, a synthetic opioid, has become a formidable adversary, affecting lives, families, and neighborhoods across our region.

Here are some critical points to consider:

  • Escalating Overdoses: Over the past few years, overdoses in Spokane have surged, with fentanyl playing a significant role. This potent drug, which is 100 times more powerful than morphine and 50 times more potent than heroin, has led to tragic consequences for many individuals and their loved ones.

  • Alarming Statistics: According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), drug poisonings are now a leading cause of death for Americans aged 18 to 45. In 2022, over 110,000 people in the U.S. died from drug overdoses, with nearly 70% of these deaths attributed to fentanyl and other synthetic opioids.

  • Local Impact: Spokane, as the second-largest city in Washington State, occupies a strategic position along the I-90 corridor. Its proximity to Canada and neighboring states makes it a central hub for narcotics distribution throughout Eastern Washington, Idaho, and Montana. Unfortunately, this also means that Spokane faces a significant challenge in combating the fentanyl crisis.

  • Indian Reservations Affected: The situation extends beyond city limits. Three Indian Reservations—Kalispell Tribe, Spokane Tribe, and Colville Tribe—in close proximity to Spokane have witnessed an alarming increase in fentanyl seizures and overdose deaths linked to this deadly substance.

  • DEA’s Efforts: The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has been actively engaged in addressing this crisis. From 2019 to 2022, the DEA seized 1670% more fentanyl in Washington. In 2022 alone, the DEA Seattle Field Division seized twice as much fentanyl in the state as the previous year. Spokane County, specifically, saw a 1098% increase in fentanyl seizures during the same period.

  • One Pill Can Kill: Fentanyl’s potency is staggering. A single pill can have devastating consequences. We must work together to raise awareness, enhance prevention efforts, and provide support to those affected by this epidemic.

Today, we come together to explore solutions, share insights, and chart a path forward. Let us collaborate, advocate, and take decisive action to combat the fentanyl crisis and protect our community.

Thank you for your commitment to this vital cause.
